A Perfect Autumn Day

I feel like over the past few years, Autumn has become a trend - and to be honest, it's a trend I am 100% on board with. I love autumn. The coziness, the beautiful colours, the endless cups of tea and of course, Halloween. After the stickiness of summer, Autumn is always welcome. By way of introduction, I thought I'd share with you my perfect autumnal day.

The day begins early-ish. As much as I love sleep, I am not one for laying in until late morning - I love the crisp, dewy freshness of the air too much. After waking up (and realistically being on my phone for 20 mins), I'll wrap myself up in my dressing gown, pull on my slippers and head downstairs for a hot drink. This changes on the daily, but I usually have a cup of tea or a matcha latte - I rarely have coffee on a morning, I'm more of a mid-afternoon coffee drinker. After drinking it, or sometimes whilst waiting for it to cool down, I'll light some incense and do some yoga - either my own flow or a video from Yoga with Adriene. The gentle stretches and power poses wake up my body and mind, and often prevent my back hurting later in the day (yes, I am 80). Incense really helps set the mood, because after yoga, I'll do my daily tarot card pull and meditate. Spirituality is really important to me, and I've only recently started reading tarot, so a card pull a day is great practice. It helps me think about my day in a new light, and often provides inspiration or a new perspective.

After I've got myself ready for the day, it's breakfast time: porridge. My favourite at the moment is stewed apple, brown sugar, cinnamon and peanut butter - it just tastes like autumn! I'd love to say that I have a mindful breakfast, but the reality is that I usually watch Gilmore Girls or some youtube. What can I say, I'm only human. At this point in the day, I'll get on with some work. I know I said my perfect day, but as a freelance filmmaker I completely adore my work! If I'm not filming, I'm usually researching, planning or editing, and not to sound too cheesy, but I genuinely love all the aspects of it. It gets my creative juices flowing and really helps me feel productive and organised, which is maybe one of my favourite feelings.

After my to-do list is full of ticks, I love an autumnal nature walk. Getting bundled up in a scarf and boots and walking until my nose is cold and leaves crunch beneath me is my idea of heaven. Following an earth-made treasure hunt as I find the last of the late summer blooms and search for conkers or the most colourful leaf my eyes are drawn to. As cliche as it sounds, one of my favourite things about autumn is the colours! I even decorated my uni room with burnt orange and dark green - I'm a tad obsessed. Connecting to nature really helps clear my head, and even on cold or rainy days, I try to get out of the house.

One of the best feelings is getting into my comfies and filling my belly with something warm. When I get home, it's time for sweats and soup - preferably homemade, preferably butternut squash. Making soup, stew or curry is one of my favourite ways to look after my body, and it always feels so cozy and lovely when autumn is in the air. If I don't make something like that for lunch, I often will for dinner, but I can almost guarantee that whatever it is, it'll be warm and filling.

The afternoon is usually spent wrapped in a blanket with a constant supply of tea, either reading, writing, baking, or playing board games with my boyfriend. At the moment I'm reading Four Tales by Philip Pullman (highly recommend!), and writing a short story about a girl and a dragon. For baking, I usually use Loving It Vegan, Bosh or Madeleine Olivia - all the recipes I've tried from them are fool-proof and delicious! Our favourite games are Magic The Gathering, Marvel: Legendary and Fairy Tile; we're on the hunt for some more two-player games, so if anyone has any recommendations, send them my way! I also often spend some time on my spirituality; I'm a practitioner of magick and am always researching and learning new things.

Dinner is the aforementioned heart-warming meal (or a takeaway, let's not lie), and the evening is spent with more blankets, more hot drinks, candles and a film night. Can you tell I love blankets and tea? To choose a film, I'm loving Rhianna Olivia's blog post (linked here) listing autumnal films and TV shows. If the weather is nice, I'd love a fire-pit, marshmallows and, you guessed it, blankets, but that would be tricky without actually owning a fire-pit. A girl can dream!

And so concludes my perfect Autumn day. Plenty of tea and hot chocolate, blankets and candles. Crispy leaves, red cheeks and misty mornings. Autumn absolutely has my heart!
